Glenveagh Castle is a 19th century castellated mansion and was built between 1867 and 1873. Its construction in a remote mountain setting was inspired by the Victorian idyll of a romantic highland retreat.

Donegal Castle is a castle situated in the centre of Donegal town. For most of the last two centuries, the buildings lay in ruins but it was almost fully restored in the 1990s. Next there is a famous castle, with a romantic tale, about three miles outside Ballyshannon. It is known as Wardtown Castle. It wasthere that “Colleen Bawn” fell in love with an outlaw, Willie Reilly, but her father would not allow her to marry him…
