“It’s only January but I’m pretty sure I’ve just seen one of the best gigs of the year” – that was my immediate reaction to The Mulligan Brothers Balor debut 12 months ago. And I was right.
The Americana Folk-Rock band from Mobile, Alabama enjoyed a phenomenally successful debut Irish tour in 2016 leaving behind an army of new found fans impatiently awaiting their return.
The Mulligan Brothers are: Ross Newell (lead vocals, guitar, and songwriting); Ben Leininger (bass and vocals) and Greg DeLuca (drums and vocals) and fiddler Melody Duncan who has recently joined the band bringing a female voice and perspective.
As the more observant of you may have noticed they’re not actually related. They’re four musicians who met playing in music venues in Mobile, Alabama – the name refers to second chances (as in the golf term ‘Taking a Mulligan’). Although we don’t know if they actually play golf. Veterans of other bands, this is where they found the music they always wanted to play.
The songwriting and warm, honest, straight-to-the heart voice of lead singer of Ross Newell draws listeners into the group’s signature sound, where the harmonies of DeLuca, Leininger and Duncan make the songs soar or haunt from the shadows.
These guys are as good as it gets. Don’t miss them.
