Duke Special’s 4th studio album ‘Look Out Machines!’ was released in 2015 on Stranger Records. The Ulster born singer songwriter and gramophone impresario, has superbly crafted this a new collection of catchy, rousing and lyrically poignant tracks. Dynamic, musically ambitious & bracingly eccentric, ‘Look Out Machines!’ sees Duke exploring new musical ground and heralds the return of an artist back at the very top of his game.
Those who know Duke Special for the platinum album ‘Songs From The Deep Forest’, and the hit song ‘Freewheel’, may be surprised by the cultural breadth of his work. His immense creative talents have seen him involved in projects as diverse as writing the theme tune for the Irish Sesame Street to writing the music for and appearing in Deborah Warner’s critically acclaimed 2009 production of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’ at London’s National Theatre.
Hailing from Belfast with a sound that is self-confessed “hobo-chic”, Duke Special – AKA the endlessly inventive Peter Wilson – is once heard, never forgotten.
VerseChorusVerse is the current moniker for Tony Wright. His extensive solo gigs across the UK, Ireland and Europe have left people rapt and relling from a particular authenticity and honestly. “This is an inspiring, uplifting, thoughtful, emotional, passionate album from an artist with the imagination, talent, drive and passion to ensure that his future musical adventures will never be lonely, but filled instead with songs of hope, lives well-lived and, above all, honesty.” Lynn Gilmour
‘the darkling air’, songwriter and vocalist Rachel McCarthy ( Farriers ) and composer
and producer Michael Keeney ( Foy Vance , Duke Special ), released their debut album “Untamed & Beloved” on October 21st. Focussing on building songs around piano, guitar and a string quartet, ‘the darkling air’create ambient soundscapes with haunting vocals.
“Storyline is one of those pieces that just stops you in your tracks……..timeless.”
Stephen McCauley, BBC Radio Ulster
“A regretful piece with the sophistication of Burt Bacharach or Carole King. Yet if there was a nod to the Brill Building school, then the song was also informed by Irish composers such as Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin………quite the combination.” Stuart Baile, BBC Northern Ireland
Atlantic Sessions is a Causeway Coast and Glens Funded Event, programmed by Snow Water and the charity partner is Help Musicians NI.
